DNA & Genetic Health Testing

At Ragroyalty Ragdolls, responsible breeding begins with comprehensive health and DNA testing. All of our breeding Ragdolls are screened to help ensure the long-term health of our cats and their kittens.

Why DNA Testing Matters

DNA testing allows us to identify inherited conditions that may not be visible during routine health checks. By testing before breeding, we can make informed decisions that prioritise health, temperament, and longevity.

Orivet Genetic Pet Care

Genetic Testing Laboratory

DNA testing is performed through Orivet Genetic Pet Care, a globally recognised leader in feline genetic testing.

Conditions We Test For

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

HCM is the most common form of heart disease in cats and can be inherited. The inherited form is autosomal dominant, so only one parent carrying the gene can pass it on.

  • HCM causes the heart wall, especially on the left side, to thicken, which can affect heart function.
  • There are multiple forms and causes of HCM, but when parents are DNA tested Clear/Negative, their kittens will also be free of the inherited mutation.

DNA testing helps ensure our breeding cats and their kittens have a healthy heart.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

PKD is an inherited, progressive condition that causes fluid-filled cysts to form in the kidneys. It is autosomal dominant, meaning only one parent needs to carry the gene to pass it to kittens.

  • There is a 50% chance of a kitten inheriting PKD if one parent is affected
  • If a Ragdoll is genetically Free & Clear of PKD, it cannot pass the condition to offspring.

DNA testing ensures we only breed cats that are free of PKD, protecting the health of future kittens.

Blood Type (A / B / AB)

Knowing blood type is essential for safe breeding and kitten health. Testing helps prevent Neonatal Isoerythrolysis (NI) in newborn kittens.

Kidney Count X-ray

All breeding cats are X-rayed to confirm they have two healthy kidneys. This is important to identify any congenital kidney abnormalities before breeding, helping ensure the long-term health of both the cat and future kittens.

FeLV & FIV

All breeding cats are tested and confirmed negative for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

FeLV is a contagious virus that can cause serious illness, including cancer and immune system suppression. FIV is a virus that weakens the immune system, making cats more vulnerable to infections. Testing ensures our breeding cats are free from these viruses to protect the health of our kittens.

Frequently Asked Questions

A DNA clear result means the cat does not carry the specific genetic mutation tested for and cannot pass it on to offspring.

While some breeders may breed carriers under strict programs, we choose a conservative approach to reduce genetic risk wherever possible.

No test can guarantee lifetime health. DNA testing significantly reduces known genetic risks, but ongoing care, diet, and environment all play important roles.

We are happy to discuss our health testing program or provide results upon request with people who purchase our kittens.
